Tuesday, August 21, 2007 - 7:45pm Sanctuary Cities in the Spotlight To win the Republican nomination for the presidency, you must take a strong stand against illegal immigration. Enter Mitt Romney. He is picking up steam in his argument against sanctuary cities. For those of you not aware of this term, a sanctuary city provides safe haven for illegal immigrants. In these cities, police officers are not allowed to ask people about their immigration status.
There are many sanctuary cities in the United States including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Miami, Washington, D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, Baltimore, and Detroit. Another city in the news that is also a sanctuary city is Newark, New Jersey. Three young adults were recently killed there in an execution-style shooting. The main suspect is an illegal immigrant with a violent criminal history.
You'll notice from this list that Boston is not a sanctuary city, despite being the capital and largest city of the most liberal state in the union. Mitt Romney was the Republican Governor of Massachusetts and did not allow Boston to become yet another safe haven for illegals. Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York City, welcomed illegals to his town with open arms.
Romney is bringing this issue to light in new radio ads in Iowa and on the stump. He correctly points out that Rudy Giuliani did nothing to address the problem of illegal immigration in his city.
This is an topic that will stick with American GOP voters. Conservatives demand to have a candidate that is tough on illegal immigration. Rudy Giuliani is leading the national polls at the moment, but if Mitt Romney is able to show that Rudy is soft on illegals, that lead will quickly evaporate. This one issue could vault Mitt Romney all the way to the Republican nomination. Political Critic - political blogs, conservatives, liberals, democrats, republicans, blog, political opinion. |
