Thursday, August 24, 2006 - 12:30am Senator George Allen (R-VA) Losing Ground Rapidly to James Webb A little more than a week ago, Senator George Allen made a racial slur toward an Indian-American that was caught on video. His lead over Democrat James Webb was about 11% at the time. Two polls have come out since and Allen's lead has shrunk considerably. In a Rasmussen poll taken two days after Allen's macaca comment, his lead was down to 5%. Another poll was conducted by Survey USA from 8/18 - 8/20 which shows the lead narrowing further to 3%.
This is officially a competitive Senate race. Analysts believe it is only temporary, but Allen's challenger is no slouch. A spotlight on this race will only increase James Webb's profile and highlight George Allen's mistakes. If the Democrats pour some money into Virginia, they may be able to take this seat. At the moment, it seems they have a better shot at Virginia than they do with Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee.
