The
land-locked nation in the southern portion of the continent
of Asia is the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. With a
capital of Kabul, the country is home to more than 28
million people. The 2012 Afghanistan calendar focuses
on ancient artifacts that have been hidden until recently.
The nation has been the site of numerous wars in the last
thirty years. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in
1979, while the United States has occupied the country since
2001. This Afghanistan 2012 calendar does not get into
such conflicts and focuses instead on the beauty of the
region. The Soviets withdrew in 1989, but a civil war
has been ongoing for decades. Three years after the
Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan, the government fell
to the mujahideen resistance. That set the stage for
the Taliban's rise to power in 1996, which they then used to
provide safe harbor for the Al-Qaeda terrorist group. |
