The Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 28, 1937 and is located in San Francisco, California. The Golden Gate Bridge is the most recognizable landmark in the city and this poster is more of a blueprint of what was to come. The chief engineer, Joseph Strauss, was the designer of over 400 bridges in the past, so he came with a lot of experience. He had not built something this large before, but few ever had. The construction on the Golden Gate Bridge took more than four years. The odd part about the bridge is that there are tons of suicide jumps. Someone jumps off the Golden Gate Bridge every two weeks (on average) and plummets to their death. It is estimated that there have been over 1,300 suicides. Very few people have actually survived the jump. Politicians are finally looking into creating a barrier to prevent such jumps. |
