The Dalai Lama is considered to be the head of the Tibetan people. From the 1600's to 1959, the entity was the leader of the Tibetan government. They never controlled every area of Tibet, but did have authority over many parts. When the Dalai Lama dies, a search is conducted for a small child to replace him. It typically takes a few years for this replacement to be found, so there is often a lag from one to the next. In 1959, the government of China decided that they wanted to take control of Tibet. This particular Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India, but he has maintained his government even while in exile in another land. There is now a vast movement to free Tibet from it's illegal occupation. |
