He was elected to the Senate in 1964 and decided to run for President in 1968. Robert Kennedy was on his way to the Democratic nomination when he was shot in the head at pointblank range. He died the next day on June 6, 1968 at the age of 42. Ted Kennedy has served as Senator of Massachusetts since 1963.
