She was born as a slave in New York state somewhere around 1797 as Isabella Bomefree. In 1827, she escaped into Canada, where blacks could live freely. Two years later, Sojourner returned to New York, as they had abolished slavery. Sojourner Truth transformed herself into a great speaker and a fighter for women's rights and for ending slavery. She moved to Northampton, Massachusetts in 1841 and in 1850, she produced her biography entitled "Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave". Sojourner Truth later moved to the state of Michigan, where she continued her work. She also helped Union soldiers during the Civil War. She died in 1883.
