Jimi Hendrix was just 28 years old when he died, but had already become a legend in that short amount of time. Jimi Hendrix was a left-handed player with a right-handed guitar. He had to turn it upside down to play it. Jimi Hendrix taught himself the guitar at an early age. He was controversial at times, as his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was considered by some to be anti-American. He became famous in the last five years of his life. Jimi Hendrix died in his sleep after taking nine sleeping pills and choking on his vomit.
