This was a great American comedy trio for decades in the 20th century. Larry Fine, Harry Moses Howard, and Samuel Howard made up the original threesome. Samuel was known as Shemp and got his nickname because his mother had trouble pronouncing his first name. He left the group in 1931 and his younger brother Jerome (Curley) took over. By 1930, they started appearing in movies and they became a big hit in the 1930's, 1940's, and early 1950's. They starred in 190 short subject movies. Curley passed away in 1952, while Shemp passed in 1955. They tried to replace him and continue, but did not meet with as much success. Larry and Moe lived on until 1975. |
