Up
against the state line of Louisiana, the Warren County city
of Vicksburg is about forty miles outside of Jackson.
The Mississippi town was established in 1826 and by 1900
over 14,000 people lived there. Being in the deep
South, the red, white, and blue in these Vicksburg t-shirts
is all the rage. However, the city did not celebrate
the Fourth of July until World War II. During the
civil war, the Confederate General surrendered the city on
July 4th, 1863 at the Siege of Vicksburg. General
Ulysses S. Grant took over the city after crossing the
Mississippi River. The second Vicksburg t-shirts skip
ahead to the 1950's and the retro design look. Today,
the community is vastly different than in the past. It
is now 60% African American and only 38% White. |
